Everyone is talking about self-love and you probably heard “You can’t love another person until you love yourself first” many times. If someone asked you if you love yourself I am sure you would say of course. But do we really love ourselves enough?!
Practising self-love can be challenging for many of us, especially in times when we face serious challenges. How many times you were beating yourself up with cruel self-talk and tormenting yourself with thoughts like “I’m not good enough”, “I don’t deserve it” or “This is really not for me” or set yourself up for failure with unrealistic expectations? I am definitely guilty of this. I have extremely high standards for myself which very often lead to burn out and disappointment.
One of the resolutions I made this year was to learn to be kinder to myself. It’s not about being self-absorbed or narcissistic, it’s about getting in touch with yourselves, your well-being and your happiness. I believe practising self-love can help us push through our limiting beliefs and live a life that truly shines.
In the beginning of this year I made a list of different activities which helps me to practise self-love. I still time from time catch myself giving myself a hard time about something. There is an inner critic inside of me trying to keep me small and safe but I am fighting him and I am definitely much kinder to myself and I definitely feel happier. So I decided to share my list with you.
1. Star your day with a positive thought
I start each day by telling myself something really positive. Maybe how lovely I look today or how well I handled a challenging situation. Anything that makes me smile.
2. Stop comparing yourself to others
I am probably not alone here, all of us probably unconsciously compare our lives and achievements to others, especially now when social media allows us to see more into other people’s lives and no one ever posts when they are having a bad day. Instead I am thinking about the things I can be grateful for. Also there is no one on this planet like us so we can’t fairly compare yourself to someone else.
The feeling I get when I realise I have done something I have never done before is incredible. Starting my business is challenging journey which constantly pushes me out of my comfort zone. Most of the time it’s scary but the feeling you get after achieving a positive result is all worth it.
I also love to play with my style, trying new trends, silhouettes or colours always guarantees me I feel excited and happy about myself.
I always feel there is not enough hours for everything but it is so important to slow down and appreciate little things around you. Short walk in a park, enjoying the sunshine or having your favourite dessert in a beautiful surroundings do wonders.
Too often we forget that it’s all about a journey not a destination. Acknowledging and celebrating small achievements can bring so much happiness in life. I used to wait for other people to be proud of my achievements. Now I pat myself on the back and tell myself how proud I should feel about what I have achieved. And most importantly don’t forget to reward yourself, treat yourself to a nice meal, glass of champagne, new lipstick or new pairs of shoes. We deserved it!
I would like to finish my post with a quote I came up recently which I really love “You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.” — Buddha
